When I got home Laura was sleeping in the yard. I did not disturb her. The first drops of rain there was a storm coming in (she stayed sleeping). When I got home Laura was sleeping in the yard near magnolias.
A blue-green bird was trapped inside. It circled and flew towards the sky-blue window, its feathers were on the floor.

Morning Light

I swallowed all the letters she wrote to me
rolled them in pieces and drank them with whiskey
in the warm morning light she speaks
of the polish of a branch
I try to clear it - the desk in my throat
she holds my life in a branch my pain in a ditch
I see the light (the windows accepted bricks)
the birds here sound like chairs all I have and all
I feel is all I have and all I feel - oh!

Hawk

A hawk slid to the left yesterday
I had forgotten my keys
A hawk spat into the trees...
There's a horse in the bedroom
I was sleeping near the fireplace
the room was orange
in the 1920s
I wonder what the people did
to sharpen the time?
I think of a note to describe the hawk
I walk around the yard
Did it arrive like a piece of paper
or a falling piece of paper?

N: In two, short years our words have slipped. Now, in five minutes, I'll take the mare down to re-shoe her.
M: Don't be long. Watch out for carpet snakes. How old are these pears?
N: They're the same colour as the foal.
N (later to E): I've got a filly in my chest. When you get the papers I get a filly in my chest.

The spider web in your eye was taken away. It stopped raining. I wiped the embarrassment off your face, put it in a jar near the horse and cooked it with a little oil.
